a quick guide to Himalayan salt crystal lamps

I’ve been coveting my salt crystal lamps for years, somewhat knowing the purpose, but just liking the look of it more than anything. I’m not calling myself progressive or anything, considering Himalayan salt crystals have been around for literally millions of years, but these lamps seem to be popping up like little mushrooms. I have had a salt crystal lamp shining brightly in my grade four classroom for the past two years and love the glow that it provides day in and day out. The students love it too! They let me know pretty quickly when the corner of my desk isn’t lit by a soft pink Himalayan salty glow.

It is said that the benefits provided by a salt crystal lamp are the result of the generating of negative ions, which (in theory) will do the following: purify the air, increase energy levels, neutralize electromagnetic radiation from all of our electronic devices, and provide some relief from Seasonal Affective Disorder. There is a science to it, but I’m not going to try to fake my way through an explanation. Just trust me on this one. If anything, the idea that it is helping detox our uber-polluted indoor air, I’m all in.

The benefits provided by a salt crystal lamp depend on a few factors. Here’s what to look for when choosing the best fit for you:

Size– The bigger the salt lamp, the stronger the effect. Lamps can weigh anywhere from 5 to 50 pounds. The rule of thumb is that 1 pound of salt will filter a 4×4 ft area. Bigger is better, as the saying goes.

Color: Darker orange-colored lamps are typically considered higher quality.  It should be specified that a lamp is 100% Himalayan salt. Some imitations use lower quality salt

Surface: The idea here is that the surface area of a lamp determines the health-benefiting potential, which means the Rougher lamps have a higher surface area than smooth and polished lamps and are more effective at improving air quality. This is far from a scientific explanation, but you get the idea.

So, now that you have a perhaps vague idea what the point is of these pretty accessories loved by granola munchers everywhere, I hope you will be inspired to add a little Himalayan salt crystal lamp to your casa.
